A Better Chance's mission is to increase substantially the number of well-educated young people of color who are capable of assuming positions of responsibility and leadership in American society.
In 1962, eight years after the historic Supreme Court case Brown vs. the Board of Education, a group of 23 headmasters in the New England area met to discuss the relationship of poverty to the lack of quality education. In 1963, Dartmouth College, in Hanover, New Hampshire, became the site of a radical experiment to prepare 55 ninth and tenth grade students to enter private schools, each of which had agreed to accept some of them that fall. The eight-week tutorial summer session at Dartmouth College, known as PROJECT ABC: A Better Chance, became a runaway success.
