• Mission:

Murera Community Empowerment and Support organization is a non profit organization based in Kenya and established in hey year 2000 with a mandate of biodiversity Conservation and community awareness raising initiative with an aim of addressing human activities and processes that threaten the marine environment and ecosystems.

• History:

Like many other countries, the limited land and marine areas of Kenyan coast are under considerable pressure from growing population and community activities. Poor natural resource management, coupled with poorly planned or executed development activities have, and are continuing to deplete the limited renewable natural resource base of the country. Government has institutionalized its role in environmental planning and management with supporting legislation and regulation, but there is still much to be done to ensure effective implementation of policies and plans both at the government and community levels.

It is after realizing these drawbacks that a group of concern community members in Kenya realized that if Kenya’s marine biodiversity was to be effectively protected and sustainably managed for now and the future, greater effort were needed to ensure that the support and participation of local communities in such initiatives was sustained and this brought about establishment of this organization.
