In partnership with the community and the United Methodist Church, we offer a wide array of services to children, youth and families in need, strengthening the capacity of each to thrive in society.

• History:

Since its inception, 146 years ago, Epworth has been actively meeting the needs of the extremely underserved population of adolescent youth who have found themselves, for a variety of reasons, feeling as if they are continuously facing disheartening adversity. In 1864, Epworth was established to address the housing and educational needs of “unwanted” orphaned children during the Civil War era. As our world has grown more complex, so too have the challenges we face. Most are able to cope with these challenges, but many succumb; drug and alcohol addictions, domestic violence, physical and sexual abuse and neglect are not uncommon. Families are torn apart and our neighborhoods are weakened – the children of these families are the orphans of the living. Epworth’s goal is to provide the support these children must have so that they may become full participants in the life of the community. Each of Epworth’s programs is based upon a moral obligation to make a positive difference in the lives of youth and families through promoting family preservation, preventing abuse and neglect, and encouraging self-sufficiency and independence.
