  • Mission:
  • The Westmoreland Children and Youth Association INC, is a non-profit 501-c3 community based service organization founded in 2009 and committed to improving the quality of life for the children of Portsmouth. The Westmoreland Children and Youth Association INC. is comprised of community leaders and volunteers that have committed to sponsoring and supporting Youth Baseball, Flag Football and Cheerleading, and mentoring as a way to keep our youth engaged in positive activities and teach values that will serve them in their futures.

  • History:
  • WCYA is an established League providing Baseball, Flag Football and Cheerleading and mentor services. With an established mentoring component the Association is able to reach out to other children and youth in partnership with 4 elementry schools, Brighton, Park View, Douglas Park and James Hurst. Youth baseball and flag football programs are each divided into 24 teams: eight t-ball teams ages 5-8, eight girls softball teams ages 9-12 and eight boys baseball teams ages 9-12. Flag Football will consist of ten teams ages 5-8, ten teams ages 9-12 and ten teams ages 13-16. Cheerleading will be available to approximately 10 squads ages 5-15. All programs are co-educational for those who wish to play on a co-ed team. We will rely on individuals, businesses and churches sponsor teams.

To date we have commitments from sponsors to support 10 youth baseball teams and 8 flag football teams 5 Cheerleading Squads. The sponsorships cost each individual or religious organization the following amounts, T-Ball $350.00, girls softball and boys baseball $450.00, flag football and cheerleading $200.00 per team. Sponsorship fee includes all children’s uniforms. Each child also needs $10.00 for insurance which we propose raising through donations. We are hoping the area foundations can help offset the cost of equipment, officials, and trophies. The Westmoreland Children and Youth Association is continuously developing its’ mentor program for the participants to grow towards being responsible adults and good citizens. In addition the mentor program provides mentoring for the participants and under a partnership with the 4 elementary schools, our goal is to ensure their understanding of basic values, team work, and community service and character development. Our first mentor project is in partnership with the Master Gardeners Program, Little Sprouts Garden.
Tyrone Hines, Leon Turner and our President Willie Carr are veterans of managing youth sports programs.
2010 was successful and culminated in Youth Baseball there were 21 Teams with 250 participants and regarding Flag Football, 19 Teams with 260 participants and 6 Cheerleader Squads with 70 participants. Baseball games were played at the Joseph E. Parker Field in Mount Hermon. As for Flag Football a partnership with the Portsmouth Public Schools, Superintendant, Dr. David Stuckwich and the Principle of Westhaven Elementary School, Mrs. Patricia Williams jointly agreed to allow the Association use of the school’s field for games. The establishment of the WCYA Mentor Program was achieved recruiting 37 potential mentors and 60 potential mentees.
