- Mission:
Our mission is to walk alongside Latinos living with cancer and their families as they find their way through the fear, confusion and uncertainty of a cancer diagnosis. We aim to reduce the devastating effects of a cancer diagnosis by assisting Latinos in identifying coping skills that will assist them through the various stages of their illness, and support their ability to meet the challenge of a frightening disease.
- History:
In 1992 the Cancer Support Community (CSC) founded the Latino Outreach Project, the Bay Area's first Spanish-language program created to provide psychosocial support to Latinas diagnosed with cancer. In 1995, Dr. Carmen Ortiz, a breast cancer survivor, took over the project, and members renamed the program Círculo de Vida (CDV). After infusing the program with values reflective of Latinos, such as familismo (the importance of the family unit), personalismo (the importance of warm, interpersonal relationships), Dr. Ortiz tripled the number of support group participants. Because this was the only support group in the Bay Area, women from Oakland, San José, San Rafael, and Daly City often made the long trip into San Francisco to attend. In 1998, after CSC integrated its services with the University of California, San Francisco, CDV stayed behind to remain connected to the Latino Community in the Mission District, and began laying the groundwork to incorporate as a separate entity. CDV formally incorporated in 2000, receiving non-profit status in 2003.
CDV is the only organization in the San Francisco Bay Area providing comprehensive, ongoing cancer support services in Spanish to Latinos living with cancer and their families. CDV has served nearly 5,000 cancer patients and their families, and has significantly impacted Bay Area Latinos living with the consequences of a cancer diagnosis. Offering the first successful cancer support program in the San Francisco Bay Area, CDV has been a model for support programs in five Bay Area cities. CDV’s name is synonymous with quality culturally competent cancer psychosocial support services and has won numerous awards and recognitions.
