General

  • Mission:
  • The tri-fold mission of the Pregnancy Center & Clinic of the Low Country is to enable women in Beaufort and Jasper Counties to receive early adequate prenatal care; to make responsible choices regarding reproductive health issues and sexual behavior, including abstinence, by providing educational, spiritual, emotional, financial and/or material support; and guidance through the social services system.

  • History:
  • Incorporated as a non-profit organization in June 1990, the PCCLC is the only free prenatal clinic within 100 miles, offering completely free prenatal care through the 16th week of gestation, as well as 21 other free services.
For more than two years, the PCCLC researched the most effective means of expanding its outreach, delivering prenatal care to the uninsured in the poverty-stricken areas of Jasper & southern Beaufort County, SC. In 2009, a Free Mobile Medical Unit was launched, in which the Medical Clinic is able to go TO the patient, reducing the problem of transportation, increasing accessibility, and ensuring healthy outcomes. The PCCLC is projecting a minimum of 800 individuals served at this clinic in 2012, in addition to the 3,000 projected at the Hilton Head location. The funds received will help provide the tests and supplies needed for the free direct medical care programs at the Mobile Clinic in 2012. This entails pregnancy confirmation (blood test and ultrasound exam), Sexually-Transmitted Infections diagnosis and treatment, prenatal vitamins, medical supplies, nurses' salaries, and medical insurance.
In just the three years the Mobile Clinic has been operational, more than 2,100 individuals have been assisted - 2,100 women who otherwise would not have received crucial medical care/intervention.
Statistics garnered from Alliance Partners show that the joint efforts to improve adequacy of prenatal care for Beaufort County is showing an increase in the percentage of women receiving prenatal care. Final results will be available at the end of 2012, but preliminary data are showing the prenatal care adequacy rates are rising in the four-county region, specifically Beaufort County (51.8% in 2005 up to 65.3% in 2009).
Additionally, a total of 254 received English as a Second Language classes during 2011; and 116 participated in the educational meetings held twice a month. The PCCLC is effecting not only medical change, but also lifestyle change.
