211 is the health and human service equivalent of 911 to give or get help. 211 of Northwest Michigan will enhance the quality of life for the residents of Antrim, Benzie, Charlevoix, Emmet, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska and Leelanau counties via a 24 hour a day, 7 day a week access to detailed and accurate information and referral services. 211 of Northwest Michigan will become the centralized referral system for emergencies (Homeland Security, disease epidemics, crime victims, laid-off workers, relief to the 911 system, housing assistance, childcare) and will provide our communities with specific data to help decision makers identify gaps and better appropriate funding.
Committees have been working on an Information and Referral System for the past 25 years in our region. We have long understood the needs for such a system and how it would not only help people living in crisis but also help agencies, organizations and government to be more efficient in their delivery of services.
211 of Northwest Michigan has been organized to implement 211 in our Northwest Michigan region. Charlevoix and Emmet counties have joined this coalition to implement services in their area and Wexford and Missaukee are looking to join 211 of Northwest Michigan in the future because of the efficiency of getting FCC approval and the efficiencies of marketing of the 211 number as all radio and television outlets cover our entire area. Our sharing of all the same marketing materials and information will drastically cut down on confusion with the public when 211 is implemented, making it available to all and not just some of our residents.
