  • History:
  • B.E.S.T. Opportunities began in the town of Barstow California, a roughly isolated rural community located in the northern region of San Bernardino County. A group of parents set up a program so that their children with developmental disabilities would have a place to gather, gain support, and focus on skill building activities and opportunities.
For several years the program consisted of an Adult Development Center (ADC) Program. This program consisted of about 15 clients who attended Monday through Friday. They participated in social and vocational activities. The staff at the facility focused on seeking employment options for these individuals. These individuals performed limited paid work out in the community.
By 2003 B.E.S.T. Opportunities has 3 separate programs. The Adult Development Center, a Supported Employment Program, and an Employment Services Program. The organization began expanded the individualized services and the number of individuals served from this time until present. The Adult Development Center assists those with developmental disabilities with community inclusion, self-advocacy skills, and vocational skills. The Supported Employment Program is paid employment for individuals with developmental disabilities within jobs that are contracted to B.E.S.T. Opportunities. Individuals work in groups of three, are provided with ongoing guidance and supervision and are transported to and from their homes to the job site. The Employment Services Program is for any individual with any disability. These individuals work with a Job Developer who assists them with finding and retaining employment individually in the community.
In 2003 the total number of clients served was 30. Currently there is 150 clients who are served through B.E.S.T. Opportunities program services. A total of 90 clients are full-time employees with the Supported Employment Program. The Adult Development Center serves about 30 clients who are not yet ready transition to the Supported Employment Program or due to physical and medical reasons cannot transition to the Supported Employment. B.E.S.T. Opportunities will be opening a second facility that will consist of an Adult Development Center and Employment services program in Victorville located about 35 miles south of Barstow.
