General

  • Mission:
  • Boys & Girls Clubs of Silicon Valley (BGCSV) is a private non-profit organization that provides affordable, innovative and effective youth development programs for youth ages 6 to 18 years. Our mission is to inspire and empower all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible adults.

  • History:
  • BGCSV has been serving youth in Santa Clara County since 1944, when it was founded as Boys City. Founder Harry Slonaker wanted to provide a place for boys to go after school, a positive alternative to the streets. Using city-donated land and a building fund from the community, he established a permanent Clubhouse in downtown San Jose. In 1956, Boys City became affiliated with the Boys Clubs of America. In 1968, to serve the growing need, a second Clubhouse was built in East San Jose. In 1992, the Levin Clubhouse opened in South San Jose and all Clubs began serving both boys and girls to reflect as required by the merging of the national Boys & Girls Club programs. A satellite Club at Miner Elementary School was opened in 2003 for students there. Over the last four years, we have opened and chartered six additional after-school sites in the Milpitas and Oak Grove school districts.
BGCSV is a local, autonomous organization and chartered affiliate of Boys & Girls Clubs of America. We employ 72 youth development professionals, supplemented by a cadre of dedicated volunteers with an annual operating budget of $2.5 million. We offer daily access to a broad range of programs and activities in six core areas:
    • Character and Leadership Development
    • Education and Career Development
    • Health and Life Skills
    • Arts and Cultural Enrichment
    • Sports, Fitness and Recreation
    • Technology

For 65 years, BGCSV has been at the forefront of youth development, providing quality after school and summer programs for youth in predominantly low income, underserved communities. Our mission is to inspire and empower all young people, especially those who need us most, to achieve their full potential as productive, responsible and caring adults. We actively seek to enrich the lives of girls and boys (ages 6 to 18), particularly targeting those who other youth agencies have difficulty reaching. BGCSV is dedicated to ensuring that our community’s youth have greater access to affordable, quality programs and services that will enhance their lives and shape their futures.
Today, more than 3,000 regular Club members participate in the programs, activities and services provided by BGCSV at ten locations in San Jose and Milpitas. We serve an additional 7,000 youth annually through events and programs offered collaboratively with other local non-profits, schools and community groups.
