  • Mission:
  • ANGEL HARVEST’s mission is linking the community’s food resources to the community’s needs in an effective and efficient manner.
An innovative non profit reducing the waste of good food by redistributing good un-served perishable food directly and immediately to emergency feeding charities feeding the hungry men, women, and children of Los Angeles County.

No one does what we do. ANGEL HARVEST is the only program to:
    1) Focus but not limited to picking up good un-served perishable food (hot, cold or frozen); not just canned and packaged food.
    2) Deliver the food directly to shelter for the hungry person’s next meal; not to a warehouse for storage.
    3) Give the food free; with no administrative or per pound costs.

OUR SPECIALTY is the proper handling of perishable food (hot, cold or frozen)

OUR UNIQUENESS the proven dependability and professionalism.

  • History:

  • It started with a potato skin appetizer. In 1980 Helen verDuin Palit managed a soup kitchen for Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. At this time all soup kitchens in America could only afford to serve vegetarian soups and bread to the homeless and hungry. One evening, enjoying a potato skin hors d’oeuvre at a fashionable restaurant she wondered what happened to the potatoes insides. Asking the manager they reported it was a problem since with too much leftover each day. He offered them for her soup kitchen. Each day 30 gallons of cooked potato insides were donated, for taster soups and salads to be served.
In three months they had a gourmet soup kitchen with appetizers, salads, entrees of beef, pork, chicken, seafood, and desserts, all happily donated from local restaurants, stores and caterers.
In another three months there was too much food donated!
As a former restaurant manager, Helen realized that this was a common situation: companies with food they cannot use while at the same time, soup kitchens and shelters needing more food to feed their hungry men women and children.
The solution was a link: a telephone and transportation system that literally matched the community needs to the community’s resources. The HARVEST concept was created.
In 1982, NYC’s Mayor Koch asked Helen to organize CITY HARVEST. The first year one million meals worth of food was distributed by volunteers. New systems designed picked up food from Wall Street’s executive dining rooms, restaurants, hotels, photographers and private Park Ave parties for hungry New Yorkers.
In 1989, President Bush named Helen his Fourth Point in his Thousand Points of Light Campaign for her creation of CITY HARVEST with his mandate to replicate this successful program in other cities, Helen organized AMERICA HARVEST, another nonprofit funded to provide free technical assistance to other cities. Why should anyone re-invent the wheel?
Currently there are 1,103 HARVEST programs in the US and the world using this innovative distribution model. Each independent program is tailored to that community’s needs, resources, spirit and ethos. Before you finish your dinner tonight, enough food for one million meals today is delivered for the hungry people’s next meal. 3 Billion meals and counting

ANGEL HARVEST was organized when ABC INC executive management realized there was a need here in Los Angeles in 1995. Upset that too much food was left over from entertainment industry parties and people were in need.

Why does ANGEL HARVEST work so well? First, we understand the needs of each type of food donor. Second, behind the scenes we handle a complex interrelationship of logistics: highway traffic flow, the Health Department’s guidelines, IRS regulations, and of course, Murphy’s Law hour by hour.

ANGEL HARVEST picks up from the Oscars, Grammys, major corporation's executive dining rooms and cafeterias, Whole Foods and Trader Joes, photographer photo shoot props, caterers weddings and bat/bar mitzvahs and more.

Together, we are neighbors feeding our neighbors.
