  • Mission:
  • Wave City Care (DBA for Hampton Roads Community Care) is a private 501(c)(3) organization located in Virginia Beach, Virginia dedicated to improving the lives of individuals and families right here in Hampton Roads, Virginia. The organization’s mission is to provide help and healing for the release of the best in human potential. This is accomplished through the core program areas of Basic Care (Food Distribution, Soup Kitchen, and Clothes Closet), Educational Services (Tutoring and Mentoring) and Health and Human Services (Presentations, Counseling, Addiction Recovery and Women in Crisis). Our vision is that by partnering with others, together we will empower our community one life at a time. Our programs at this time, focus on the communities of Portsmouth, Norfolk, and Virginia Beach.

Each week, Wave City Care Healthy Living Supplemental Food programs assist scores of families in Virginia Beach and Norfolk. Our Atlantis Grille (Soup Kitchen) feeds over 70 at-risk children, 15 single moms and 30 seniors every Monday in Atlantis Grille, a low income neighborhood in Virginia Beach. Our food distribution provides perishable food to over 15 families weekly. As a host site for Angel Food and a distribution site for 7 additional host sites, Wave City Care helps provide quality food at economical prices monthly to assist hundreds of families in these tough economic times. When interviewed by local television stations, customers reported that while they would never consider applying for food stamps, they were thrilled that Angel Food afforded them the opportunity to significantly save on their food bills and survive month to month. Additionally, each month Wave City Care holds a Community in Action day at two sites in Norfolk. Healthy Living classes are provided to the single moms covering subjects like nutrition, good health, exercise and building a healthy self image.

Our Educational Services programs assist children through in and after school tutoring and mentoring. SHINE for Girls is a mentoring program for teens addressing strength, worth and purpose. Wise Guys is a new mentoring program for young men that we will be launching this fall. Wave City Care partners with local schools providing assistance through Back to School supplies and even an annual school makeover. For the last four years, over 200 volunteers have come together to re-landscape, paint, install playground equipment, clean, power wash, and perform a myriad of tasks to help Dreamkeepers Academy, a local Norfolk elementary school prepare for the school year. Additionally, we have provided school supplies for the entire school body- over 450 children and another 500 students throughout Norfolk and Virginia Beach.

Our Health and Human Services programs focus on helping individuals of all ages live healthier lives. Our Reality Check program is a unique sexual and relational health education program created specifically for middle and high school aged children, both boys and girls. This informative program is designed to prevent teenage pregnancy through the promotion of sexual integrity and emphasizes the emotional, physical, and social benefits of abstaining from sex until an appropriate time. To date, we have found this program to be extremely well received by both the teens, the parents and the supervisors. Regeneration is an addiction recovery program focused on helping both men, women and teens get past the stumbling blocks they have encountered to live healthy and productive lives.

Over 2,000 families and children in Hampton Roads communities have received direct assistance from Hampton Roads Community Care in the form of food, clothing, tutoring, mentoring, back-to-school supplies, recovery programs, and holiday outreaches.

  • History:
  • Wave City Care (DBA for Hampton Roads Community Care) began serving at-risk families in 1999 under the name Beach Care and received its formal recognition of exemption in 2002. In 2003, we changed our name to Hampton Roads Community Care to reflect the larger scope of our efforts. In January 2010, we officially submitted an DBA name of Wave City Care a simpler and more easily recognized name.

Since 1999, thousands of families in Hampton Roads communities have received direct assistance from Wave City Care in the form of food, clothing, tutoring, mentoring, back-to-school supplies, addiction recovery programs and holiday outreaches.

Every year, we expand or enhance our programs into new neighborhoods or provide new services. For example, in 2009, we expanded our mentoring programs for teens to include Reality Check, a sexual integrity program and SHINE, a program for girls focusing on their strength, worth and purpose.

Our vision is to partner with others to empower our community, one life at a time.
