General

  • Mission:
  • Our Mission: Inform, Empower & Advocate: Celebrating our 25th anniversary in 2008, the Center for Responsive Politics (CRP) is the nation's premier research group tracking money in U.S. politics and its effect on elections and public policy. Nonpartisan, independent and nonprofit, the organization aims to create a more educated voter, an involved citizenry and a more transparent and responsive government. In short, CRP's mission is to:
    • Inform citizens about how money in politics affects their lives
    • Empower voters and activists by providing unbiased information
    • Advocate for a transparent and responsive government
We pursue our mission largely through our award-winning web site, OpenSecrets.org, which is the most comprehensive resource for federal campaign contributions, lobbying data and analysis available anywhere.

  • History:
  • Founded in 1983, the Center for Responsive Politics is the only independent, nonprofit organization that follows all the money spent to influence federal elections and the policies that have an impact on Americans’ lives.

By leveraging technology and internal expertise, CRP has created the single most comprehensive and reliable database on federal money in politics, making it the go-to source for the press, advocacy organizations and the public, both domestically and abroad.

The Center’s web site, OpenSecrets.org, has won four Webby Awards (2001, 2002, 2006, and 2007) for being the best politics site online. In 2010, OpenSecrets.org was named a Webby Official Honoree. Since 2009, CRP has provided and maintained a vast trove of “value added” data, for free, to the press and public. By offering non-commercial access to this data, many advocacy and media organizations can—and are—now creating potentially transformational “mashups” of data and analysis that were previously not possible to compile.

In addition to fostering important work by other individuals and organizations, CRP has created its own original journalism, breaking several national news stories in 2009 and 2010. The information within two weeks-long reporting projects -- one focusing on federal health care reform and another on financial reform -- have been cited in the press dozens of times throughout 2009 and 2010.

CRP staffers regularly appear as commentators and analysts in the nations’ most prominent newspapers and blogs and on national news networks and programs, including CNN, ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox News, MSNBC, National Public Radio and the BBC.

CRP is the “gold standard” in political finance research and analysis. Other groups adopt our methods and all major media and dozens of smaller outlets trust and rely on our data.

CRP is a force multiplier. Our data powers data features on many other web sites and provides the foundation for additional research and new tools. Our presence in the field results in an overall impact that is many times greater than just our own web site’s data and analysis.

Not only do we enjoy a solid reputation among the national and “new” media, our data is relied upon by partisans of the right, left and center and by academics and developers to whom we give free access to our massive, value-added data sets.

CRP’s data and analysis have been credited with providing an important part of the evidence upon which previous reforms, including the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act (BCRA), were based. And the need for this data and expertise has never been more crucial.
