  • Mission:
  • Camp Wildcat is a non-profit organization that aims to provide cost-free camps and specialized activities for Tucson's youth. University of Arizona student volunteers provide children with the opportunity to challenge their personal limits, build interpersonal skills through teamwork, explore creative outlets, enhance their own self image, and view higher education and general success as attainable goals.

Activities include nine weekend-long camps a year in which volunteers teach elementary and middle school students about a variety subjects that revolve around a central theme. Themes vary to include educational topics including the arts, conservation, and physical education and are taught through carefully-planned rotations that rely heavily on hands-on experimental and experiential activities. Volunteers emphasize goal-setting and encouragement as major components of achieving success with these students.

The communities that Camp Wildcat reaches out to include students enrolled in Title I schools, where at least 40% of the students come from a low-income background as determined by the United States Census Bureau, as well as children in hospitals, Boys and Girls Clubs, and shelters in the Tucson community. Because of their emphasis on working with Title I schools, volunteers work with campers of diverse backgrounds that includes not only Hispanic students, but also many refugee students, as well. Many of these children have never had the opportunity to go camping, to taste a ‘smore, or to have someone tell them that they believe in them or that college—or, for that matter—any career, is worth working for.

In the last year alone, Camp Wildcat has worked with over 800 children, performed over 28,000 hours of community service, raised over $13,000 through fundraisers, and raised over $11,000 through grants and donations.
