  • Mission:
  • Career Guidance Institute is a non-profit corporation organized exclusively for educational and charitable purposes which support and benefit the people of the city of Albuquerque. Its flagship program, Albuquerque Reads, provides early intervention in assisting kindergartners from low-income families to learn to read and write. The mission of Albuquerque Reads is to ensure all students who participate in the program enter first grade reading at or above grade level, thereby closing the achievement gap, and giving these young people a much better chance at finishing high school, attending college, finding gainful employment, and sharing the love of reading with their children.

  • History:
  • In response to a growing concern for education in Albuquerque, and based in the belief that a sound education system is the key to a community’s economic vitality, the Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce established the Career Guidance Institute (CGI) in 1984. CGI was the driving force behind several bench marking visits to Texas, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Edinburgh, Scotland, and Edmonton, Alberta, Canada to study successful systemic approaches to education reform. Subsequently, the Economic Development and Education Reform Commission was formed. Working closely with Albuquerque Public Schools, the Every Child education reform initiative was developed.
In 2001, Every Child was introduced to the New Mexico State Legislature. The Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce and CGI continued, and continues today, to advocate for high standards, accountability, teacher supports and professional development, community connections, and common sense governance. In 2003, the State Legislature passed House Bill 212, which incorporates many of the tenets of our plan into the public school code.
The Chamber of Commerce and CGI turned its focus to the classroom, realizing that the business community could greatly impact the success of classroom teachers and early childhood curriculum by recruiting volunteers from area businesses and the local community to tutor students in a structured environment aimed at reinforcing what was being taught in the classroom.
Again partnering with Albuquerque Public Schools, CGI launched Albuquerque Reads at Bel-Air Elementary School in 2003. That school year, more than sixty kindergarteners benefited from the tutoring provided by our volunteers, many of which are still with the program today. The next year, two other Title I schools were added, Atrisco and Wherry Elementary Schools. During the 2010-2011 school year, 230 students, and over 450 tutors are participating in the program, with plans to extend to Tomé Elementary in nearby Los Lunas in January 2011, benefiting an additional 60 students and 150 tutors.
