General

  • Mission:
  • Cenikor is dedicated to assisting people in developing the skills needed to become responsible citizens free of substance abuse. We operate under Six Core Values: Therapeutic Community, Work, Safety, Faith, Sobriety, and Personal Responsibility.

  • History:
  • In 1967, a ground of inmates in a Colorado state prison, who were committed to breaking the cycle of substance abuse and the criminal behavior that supports their addictions, established Cenikor. With little funding, they were determined to reverse lives caught up in the cycle of addiction and develop a program that would show others how to become productive and responsible citizens. In 1970, Mayor Louie Welch invited Cenikor to open a treatment center in Houston to address an increasing need for a reliable and effective drug treatment program within the city. A Houston facility opened in 1972 moving to a more modern facility located in Deer Park (just outside of Houston) in 1994. Cenikor has expanded its services to include a residential treatment center in Ft. Worth and Baton Rouge and recently acquired a new contract with the state of Louisiana to provide services in Lake Charles. Cenikor helps people with chronic addictions. According to the 2008 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, published by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), 23.1 million Americans ages 12 and older need treatment for an illicit drug or alcohol abuse problem. Cenikor's long-term treatment program is meeting this social and human services need. Addiction prevention and treatment are important concerns to Cenikor's community outreach efforts. The Cenikor Foundation continues to be a resource to all areas of our country. We have a direct impact on The Lawrence Foundation's community with admissions from California, Washington, Oregon, Nevada, and Arizona during 2009 and 2010.
