General

  • Mission:
  • Antioch University is founded on principles of rigorous liberal arts education, innovative experiential learning and socially engaged citizenship. The multiple campuses of the University nurture in their students the knowledge, skills and habits of reflection to excel as lifelong learners, democratic leaders and global citizens who live lives of meaning and purpose.

  • History:
  • Headquartered in Yellow Springs, Ohio, Antioch University was founded as a private, socially progressive college in 1852 by Horace Mann. It has five member campuses: Antioch University Midwest, Antioch University Seattle, Antioch University Santa Barbara, Antioch University New England, and Antioch University Los Angeles. By design, the multiple campuses serve a small student population of adult learners, nurturing just over 5,000 students through an intimate environment, whole person philosophy, and unique curriculum.

Antioch University is a 501(c) (3) corporation and is accredited by the
Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) the North Central
Association of Schools and Colleges (NCA), and the Higher Learning
Commission (HLC). The University is a member of the Association of
Independent California Colleges and Universities (AICCU), Campus
Compact/California, the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities
(HACU), and the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher
    Education (AASHE).

Established in 1972, Antioch University Los Angeles (AULA) offers a BA degree completion program and master’s degree programs in psychology, creative writing, education, organizational management, and urban sustainability. Our programs encompass a traditional college semester system featuring evening classes, which better meet the needs of adult learners, and low residency programming for some graduate degrees. We provide a full-time faculty dedicated to serving adult students, including individualized academic advising; small classes and low teacher-student ratios; one-to-one independent studies and tutorials; flexible course scheduling; free tutoring in mathematics, writing, and computer competencies; experiential, hands-on learning opportunities; modern facilities; and full-service student services, including admissions and financial assistance offices, which are open during the evenings and weekends. Our university specializes in adult student learning without compromising standards of academic excellence. We have a proven track record for maximizing success for our 1,100+ students.

AULA has an annual operating budget of $16 million, 90% of which is tuition-based. Our status as a member campus of Antioch University does not include shared financial support; we are financially independent and must balance our budget each year.
