  • BBBS mission is to “provide quality one-to-one mentoring, tutoring, and professional support to reconnect at-risk youth who are socially isolated from the mainstream of life in our community. Our efforts are focused on comprehensive youth development, prevention of significant behavioral and emotional problems, and the relief of stress within the family unit so that youth build self-esteem to achieve the highest potential in their lives.”

  • History:
  • BBBS of Frederick County was founded in 1977. The agency is affiliated with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America and is mandated to implement national program standards and procedures. An affiliation agreement is renewed every year through a self-assessment process and an on site program inspection every five years. BBBS currently serves over 300 children (4-14 years) including children of prisoners through community based mentoring(CBM), school based mentoring (SBM), and site based after-school programs. BBBS of Frederick County has been serving disadvantaged and at-risk youth in Frederick for over 34 years.

    Financial support to operate diverse programs is provided by the Federal Agency of Youth and Family Services, local and national foundations, and community based fund raising activities. BBBS sponsored prevention and intervention programs are volunteer driven, and cost effective. Each mentor-mentee match costs around $1,250 per year including processing of mentor/mentee applications, training, support and empowerment, professional services and occaisonal special aid.

    BBBS operates in collaboration with many youth and family service agencies and faith based groups. These groups assist with program planning and implementation, provide in-kind support, facilities, financial contributions, and referrals. BBBS programs receive broad-based media exposure through wide ranging interviews, public appearances, and community events.

    BBBS currently implements the following diverse programs benefiting over 300 children, ages 6-14 years. Currently 70 children are on the waiting list to receive mentoring and other programs.

    •Community based BBBS program provides one-to-one and group mentors for at risk children, including children of prisoners.
    •School Based mentoring program provides one-to-one adult and high school mentoring for targeted children at elementary, and middle schools.
    •Special Needs program provides one-to-one and group mentoring for children with severe physical and mental disabilities at the Rock Creek School.
    •Group Mentoring/After-school program provides enrichment activities benefiting children on the waiting list.
    •Training and networking events for Bigs and Littles in sharing fellowship,and learning social skills.

    BBBS receives referrals from a diverse group of children from the Frederick County Public Schools and many local agencies. Fifty-five local businesses and groups assist the program with in-kind support and provide financial contributions. BBBS has received broad based media exposure through interviews, public appearances and community events. The program has met diverse program objectives and goals as set by the agency board and funding agencies. BBBS agency implements marketing, promotional and fundraising activitieis for over 300 volunteers including mentors, board and committee members.

    BBBS of Frederick County activities and programs have been recognized by various local, regional and national organizations. The program has been outperforming among mid- size BBBS programs in the country for a number of years. Our youth members participate in a variety of community service opportunities through special needs, inter-generational and other programs. Big Brothers Big Sisters of America presented the local program with a gold star performance award in 2009.
