General

  • Mission:
  • ABET provides world leadership in assuring quality and in stimulating innovation in applied science, computing, engineering and technology education. Among the most respected higher education accreditation organizations, ABET accredits almost 3,000 programs at more than 600 colleges and universities worldwide. Founded in 1932, ABET is a federation of 30 professional and technical societies representing these fields. ABET is recognized by the Council for Higher Education (CHEA), state and national licensing and certification boards, and quality assurance organizations around the globe.
ABET has partnered with the producers of the award-winning Science Screen Report, Science Screen Report for Kids and the Virtual Scientist Guest Lecture Series, to enhance outreach to schools through Allegro’s exclusive network of more than 7,000 schools nationwide. It is hoped that by engaging more students in science through such interactive programs as the “virtual scientist” it will inspire creative young minds to explore their true potential.

  • History:
  • ABET started as the Engineers' Council for Professional Development (ECPD), established in June 1932 was an engineering professional body dedicated to the education, accreditation, regulation and professional development of the engineering professionals and students in the United States.

Seven engineering societies founded the organization and contributed to its original direction and focus: The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers (now the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers), the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the American Institute of Electrical Engineers (now IEEE), the Society for the Promotion of Engineering Education (now the American Society for Engineering Education), the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), and the National Council of State Boards of Engineering Examiners (now NCEES).

In 1936, ECPD evaluated its first engineering degree programs. Ten years later, the council began evaluating engineering technology degree programs. By 1947, ECPD had accredited 580 undergraduate engineering programs at 133 institutions. Producing guidance and training publications was a large part of ECPD operations. The council produced dozens of books, pamphlets, brochures, and even a couple of movies.

In 1980, ECPD was renamed the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) to more accurately describe its emphasis on accreditation. In response to the anticipated boom in computer science education, ABET helped establish the Computing Sciences Accreditation Board (now called CSAB) in 1985. CSAB is now one of ABET's largest member societies with more than 300 accredited programs.

In 2005, ABET formally changed its name to ABET, Inc.
