  • Mission:
  • The mission of Abbott House is to provide comprehensive and caring services for abused, neglected and abandoned children and their families, and to offer our services with compassion, always mindful of the dignity of each person served, with a goal of securing a safe, permanent, and loving home for each child who comes to us.

As the provider of day and residential services for developmentally disabled children and adults, we celebrate the value and potential of each person as we commit our resources to enable each individual to develop to his or her fullest potential.

  • History:
  • Our mission began in the 1950s, when Abbott House—then a hospital known as Irvington House focused on care of children with chronic disease—began to shift its focus from a mission of purely medical treatment to embrace the cause of child welfare. In 1963 Abbott House was officially incorporated and in the 45 years since, the agency has expanded its mission to include foster care, group homes, adoptive placement and family services throughout the New York metropolitan area with offices and care centers in Manhattan and the Bronx as well as Westchester, Dutchess and Orange/Sullivan counties and its own school (and school district) located on the grounds of its Irvington headquarters.

In 1992 Abbott House further expanded its spectrum of services to include assistance to the mentally retarded and developmentally disabled (MRDD) population. Through assisted living programs at 15 Individualized Residential Alternatives (IRAs) and one Intermediate Care Facility (ICF), developmentally disabled “consumers” are given the opportunity to live their lives with the dignity they deserve. Through employment and volunteer programs such as Meals on Wheels and the “Grime Stoppers” work crew, our consumers are able to become positive contributors to society.

At any given time, Abbott House provides care for nearly 1,000 children, young adults and families with a goal of providing opportunity and preparing the next generation of society with the knowledge, tools and ability they need to become the individuals they deserve to be.
