  • Mission:
  • Ascencia envisions a community where people in need can find safe affordable housing and access resources to become self-sufficient.

Our mission is to end homelessness in the greater Glendale area, one person, one family at a time.

  • History:
  • In 2011, Ascencia celebrated five years of operations, serving over 6,000 homeless men, women and children. Ascencia is the new name for a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that has been operating homeless programs in south Glendale established by another operator in 1995. The programs annually assist more than 1,200 homeless men, women and children with case management services, counseling, and emergency, transitional and permanent supportive housing. In March 2012, the Glendale Chamber of Commerce named Ascencia Organization of the Year. In April 2012, Ascencia completed Annenberg Alchemy's leadership development program.

Originally known as Project ACHIEVE under the Institute for Urban Research and Development (IURD), the programs included a multi-service Access Center, 40 bed emergency housing program, twelve units of transitional housing for families and eight units of permanent supportive housing for single adults in recovery from substance abuse addiction. IURD discontinued its contracts with the City of Glendale in 2005. For six months, the City operated the projects as “Achieve Glendale.” In January 2006, the City selected People Assisting the Homeless (PATH), to assume the management of the programs. PATH organized a local board of six directors and formed a separate nonprofit corporation, PATH Achieve Glendale. At that time PATH Achieve Glendale became a member of PATH Partners, which provided centralized human resources services, communications and technology support.

In 2007, the PATH Achieve Glendale Board of Directors hired Natalie Profant Komuro as Executive Director. Ms. Komuro had 20 years experience in homeless services and policy, including her master’s project for Homeless Health Care Los Angeles and, as the original program director for Beyond Shelter, responsibility for implementing an innovative program for housing homeless families that is now a national standard. For ten years Ms. Komuro served as Director of Policy and Planning for the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority, authoring planning documents and federal grant narratives that helped yield in excess of $100 million in funding for local homeless programs.

Since her arrival in Glendale, Ms. Komuro strengthened the agency core programs and obtained grants to provide targeted services to homeless veterans and chronically homeless adults. On behalf of Ascencia she has built strategic partnerships with local hospitals and mostly recently joined a Los Angeles-area collaborative that received one of four grants made nationally to identify homeless frequent hospital users, place them in housing and provide wrap-around services.

Volunteers have played a significant role in shaping programming and supporting Ascencia’s clients. The Guest Chef program, created by Project ACHIEVE, continues to thrive, with more than 200 volunteers, including groups that have been serving dinners for more than 15 years. Newer volunteers include the Glendale Fire Chief and City Manager.

Critical to Ascencia’s success in recent years was the hiring of Ascencia’s Controller, Lucia Kung who has played a central role in managing the agency’s invoicing processes, improving collections and cash flow dramatically. Her financial management has ensured that the agency most recently was rated a “low-risk auditee.”

In 2010, with PATH Achieve Glendale growing significantly stronger operationally, PATH Partners and PATH Achieve Glendale agreed to separate, with the condition that PATH Achieve Glendale change its name and branding by December 2011. The State of California endorsed PATH Achieve Glendale’s name change to Ascencia on September 12, 2011 and the IRS affirmed the change to Ascencia in February 2012.

In 2011, the City of Glendale and the S.H. Ho Foundation each committed $2 million for the purchase and renovation of a new home for Ascencia's Access Center and Emergency Housing programs as well as nine units of permanent supportive housing. The buildings, in southeast Glendale, are scheduled to open in spring 2013.
