  • Mission:
  • The mission of the Challenger Learning Center New Mexico is to provide interactive, educational space simulations for students grades K-12. Through our programs, we help students in developing skills in decision making, teamwork, problem solving, and communication to assist them in succeeding in the 21st century.

  • History:
  • Al Unser, race car legend, was searching for a program that would provide a learning opportunity for students to practice and develop teamwork and problem solving since he knew how important both are to success in racing and in life. When he and his wife, Susan, were in Indianapolis, a friend of theirs introduced them to the Challenger Learning Center located there in Indianapolis. The rest is history, as they say. Al and Susan decided that they would bring a Challenger Learning Center to Albuquerque as their legacy for the students, teachers, and community.

The Challenger Learning Center New Mexico (CLCNM) opened in March 2010. Challenger Learning Centers are part of the international organization, Challenger Center for Space Science Education, which was founded by the family of the crew of the Space Shuttle Challenger. The Centers conduct spaceflight simulations with students, focusing on grades 5 – 8. Since the CLCNM’s opening in March, over 750 students have participated in an educational adventure that is out of this world. The focus on teamwork, problem solving, communication, and critical thinking along with science, math, engineering, and technology provides an excellent resource for schools and the community.
