  • Mission:
  • To mobilize botanic gardens and engage partners in securing plant diversity for the well-being of people and the planet.

  • History:
  • Headquartered in the United Kingdom, Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI) was established by the global plant conservation community in 1987 to address a growing need to conserve the world's plant diversity for people and the planet by harnessing the expertise and resources of the world's 2,500 botanic gardens. BGCI is now the world’s largest network dedicated to plant conservation, with more than 600 botanic garden members and conservation partners in nearly 120 countries. BGCI is a registered charity based at Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.

BGCI US was established in 1998, recognizing the fact that a wealth of expertise and experience was present in the U.S. botanic garden community but rarely mobilized at a national level and only rarely shared at a global level. As an independent 501(c)(3) organization located at Chicago Botanic Garden, BGCI US shares BGCI’s mission but is governed by an independent Board of Directors and maintains separate financial records from BGCI. Financial support for BGCI comes from its members, foundations, governments, and corporate partners. Financial support for BGCI US comes from foundations, the U.S. government, and individual donors. BGCI US is seeking funding to continue to build its role in the United States and to maintain its ability to develop and implement collaborative programs with U.S. botanic gardens and conservation partners into the future.
