  • Mission:
  • The goal of the Big Horn County Health Coalition is “Changing attitudes and perceptions of students, parents and community toward alcohol, tobacco and other drugs through education and opportunities for the purpose of reducing youth drug use”.

  • History:
  • The Big Horn County Health Coalition was formed in January of 2002 by local and county community members who saw the need to serve youth and wanted to help them make healthy choices. The organization started by community leadership reviewing data and attending trainings to better understand the scope of the current needs and the best approaches to help the Big Horn County community. Over the years, information has been drawn from but not limited to:
    • The Wyoming Department of Education’s At Risk Youth Survey
    • The Prevention Needs Assessment performed by WYSAC
    • Assessments from the Town of Lovell
    • Talking to community members at Town Hall Meetings, Health Coalition Meetings, Prescription Drug Task Force Meetings and other events
    • US Census Data

The Big Horn County Health Coalition’s original project director, Chad Lindsay, served the community for 8 years making tremendous strides toward prevention in the areas of alcohol, tobacco, drugs and prescription drug abuse. He also worked successfully to reduce high school dropout rates, reduce anti-social behavior and increase student academic success. In May of 2010, Lindsay accepted an opportunity for career advancement. Naomi Burns replaced his position. Lindsay is still tied to the community and offers support to the Health Coalition.

In addition to continuing the work that Lindsay began in Big Horn County, Burns is looking at addressing and creating awareness centering around new trends in the community such as Spice and Bath Salts. She is also creating sustainability for the Today’s Choices for Tomorrow scholarship program that helps students make positive healthy choices starting in the 6th grade.

Since its start, the Big Horn County Health Coalition has provided afterschool enrichment and tutoring programs in school districts number one and number two in Big Horn County. The Health Coalition recognizes that academic success, individual achievement opportunities and supervised time afterschool go hand-in-hand with substance abuse prevention.

The Big Horn County Health Coalition hosts or sponsors a number of events throughout the year promoting an alcohol-free, drug-free and tobacco-free lifestyle. These include but are not limited to the following:
    • Supervised after graduation party
    • Lovell Mustang Days Teen Night Out
