  • Mission:
  • The mission of the University of Maine 4-H Camp and Learning Center at Bryant Pond is to educate and inspire people of all ages and backgrounds toward social, economic, and environmental sustainability and conservation through affordable, experiential learning. We model leadership and life skills development, community collaboration, self-reliance, wellness, and a sense of stewardship for our natural world. This mission supports the broader mission of the UMaine Extension 4-H Youth Development Program, “to help Maine people improve their lives through education that uses research-based knowledge focused on issues, needs and aspirations.” The focus of our educational program is to instill in every individual an understanding of their relationship and interdependence with our natural resources, and our local communities, and to create vested civic involvement committed to sustainable lives and conservation.

  • History:
  • In April of 2008, the Maine Conservation School merged with the Pine Tree State 4-H Foundation and University of Maine Cooperative Extension to become the University of Maine 4-H Camp and Learning Center at Bryant Pond. From our merger press release: BRYANT POND, Me. —The Maine Conservation School will become the site for the new University of Maine 4-H Camp and Learning Center at Bryant Pond, thanks to collaboration announced today among University of Maine Cooperative Extension, the Pine Tree State 4-H Foundation and the Maine Conservation School. The initiative will enable expansion of the experiential natural resource and outdoor education programs that the Maine Conservation School has offered for more than 50 years.

New school and community programs will be offered in the spring and fall, and plans are underway for further program development. New brochures for the summer program are now available for families. For more information about the University of Maine 4-H Camp and Learning Center at Bryant Pond, call UMaine Extension’s Oxford County office at 743-6329.

For over 50 years, the Maine Conservation School has provided fun and challenging outdoor experiences for youth and adults. This new support from UMaine Extension and the 4-H Foundation will enable the organization to reach more of Maine’s children and families, giving them the skills and knowledge to safely and confidently explore our outdoor heritage.

Pine Tree State 4-H Foundation President Harold H. "Brownie" Brown, who was a UMaine Extension 4-H educator for more than 30 years, said, “This is a place that 4-H has a history with. I remember joining with Lew Berce of Aroostook County in the 1960s to bring 4-H groups to the Maine Conservation School, as well as working with John Marsh from IF&W on the hunter safety program. It will be a goal of the 4-H Foundation to develop an endowment to help maintain the facilities at Bryant Pond, as well as to support the Camp and Learning Center so it can continue to provide the very best educational programs to the youth of Maine and New England.”

The current Maine Conservation School Board of Directors and staff have been working closely with the Pine Tree State 4-H Foundation Board, University of Maine Cooperative Extension staff and the Oxford County Extension Association to plan and implement the merger. The camp’s assets have been transferred to the Pine Tree State 4-H Foundation, as part of the University of Maine’s ongoing comprehensive fundraising campaign, and a review is now underway to determine the new camp staffing plan.
