  • Mission:
  • Amanda's House serves as a temporary home for patients and their families that have traveled a distance to be treated at Glens Falls Hospital or surrounding facilities. The House serves a large group of people from all over New York and some from other states and even from other countries. With the new expansions of Glens Falls Hospital Amanda's House's need continues to grow. The House is free of charge for patients and families of patients; this allows those staying here to relax and temporarily spend time without having to worry about hotel or travel expenses.

  • History:
  • In 1998 Amanda Cafaro passed away at the age of 9 months after a 6 month long battle with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia. During the time of her illness, the Glens Falls and Lake George area communities raised money to help offset the costs of her medical expenses. After her death the communities decided to erect a memorial in her name.
Finch, Pruyn & Co. owned the house and made it available to the Amanda's House Committee. The house underwent major renovations for 10 months with the work being provided by volunteers and professionals who had donated their time and most of the materials. A $75,000 renovation was completed for $8000. The house was then completed with furnishings and appliances by various organizations and individuals.
The house opened its doors in January 2001 and provides a temporary home for patients and families being treated at Glens Falls Hospital or surrounding facilities. Amanda's House has served a number or people, most coming form New York State but some coming from surrounding states and even other countries. The house has three bedrooms and two bathrooms, as well as a kitchen, living and dining area and it is handicap accessible. It is staffed with local volunteers from schools, churches and CWI programs and relies solely on donations and fundraisers as it does not charge people to stay at the house.
