General

  • Mission:
  • The Castro Country Club is a clean and sober gathering place for all people and a home for the Queer recovery community. The Castro Country Club endeavors to be a space where all can seek wisdom, serenity, courage, and joy. The volunteer-based Club operates an espresso and Internet café with two meeting rooms, a lounge and patio open to the public from early morning until late at night, 365 days a year. Hundreds of people attend more than thirty self-governing 12-step groups each week, as well as shows and events including game and movie nights, and variety shows, offering sober alternatives for social gathering. In addition, the cafe provides more than 35 positions for people in recovery, facilitating their development of marketable job skills.

  • History:
  • Since it first opened its doors in April 1983, the Castro Country Club has helped countless people achieve sobriety by not only providing a safe refuge and sober social alternatives, but also by offering more than 30 self-governing 12-step groups, unstructured peer counseling, job training and skills-building, and social support and fellowship.

The Pride Institute reports that roughly 15% of Americans abuse alcohol. For the LGBT community, that rate rockets to an estimated 45%...30% higher than the mainstream population, making clear the need for LGBT-specific alcohol recovery and harm-reduction services. A touchstone for LGBT sober people in the heart of San Francisco’s Castro neighborhood, the highly-visible Castro Country Club fosters fellowship and community in the center of the storm, making it possible for more LGBT people to gain access to recovery services.

The Castro Country Club is a fiscally-sponsored program of Baker Places, a nonprofit corporation providing an array of community-based services to residents of San Francisco with mental health, substance abuse and/or HIV/AIDS-related issues. Baker Places is dedicated to assisting individuals in learning and regaining the skills to live their lives fully and productively in the community. This social rehabilitation approach guides and unifies all Baker Places’ programs. Services are aimed at being accessible, flexible, consumer-driven and culturally competent.
