  • Mission:
  • CRS advances sustainable energy through policy and market solutions. By anticipating the needs of voluntary and regulated renewable energy markets, CRS designs policies, identifies best practices and creates implementation tools to promote renewable energy generation and ensure that consumers receive the benefits they have paid for. In the United States, CRS is the leader in creating market mechanisms that support climate change mitigation, energy independence, job creation and reducing local pollution through education, advocacy, certification, and promotion of renewable energy. Located in San Francisco's Presidio, CRS maintains a staff of 14, and a $1.9 million annual budget.

  • History:
  • Founded in 1997, CRS’ work in the voluntary renewable energy market has been the catalyst driving hundreds of millions of dollars from voluntary purchasers like AVEDA, Office Depot, and SC Johnson & Son, into the renewable energy sector. Through its renewable energy certification program Green-e Energy, CRS is creating a vibrant, competitive voluntary green power industry that supports several thousand megawatts of newly installed renewable energy generation. For every year since 2004, voluntary demand for renewable energy has exceeded the total amount of new renewable energy required by all US State-mandated renewable energy programs combined. This means that, while state and federal regulations are necessary to help shift our economy toward sustainability, they are not the only significant drivers of growth in the renewable energy sector. CRS’s programs—Green-e, Policy Initiatives, and Expert Assistance—fill that gap by providing services that satisfy the demands of energy consumers.

CRS—a national nonprofit based in San Francisco’s Presidio National Park with a staff of 12 and a $1.9 million budget—currently works with more than 50 organizations and business participants in its Green-e Marketplace program, and is the presenting sponsor and host of the Renewable Energy Markets (REM) conference, the nation's only annual conference serving the voluntary renewable market. In addition, CRS is an advisor to the China Sustainable Energy Program, which works with key Chinese policymakers and research institutions to develop and implement clean energy policies that will yield significant reductions in the environmental damage associated with energy production use and, in particular, reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.
