  • Mission:
  • The Blue Ridge Center for Environmental Stewardship (BRCES) is an 894-acre nature preserve that weaves together nature, history, farming, recreation, education, and an enthusiastic vision for the future. Our mission is to inspire environmental stewardship by providing an understanding of how each individual’s everyday choices have an impact on the natural world. BRCES is the largest publicly accessible natural area in Loudoun County, VA, and our center draws more than 5000 visitors per year from all across the region, including the metro DC area. We offer a unique environmental learning center that combines recreational opportunities, outdoor and environmental education programs, and college-level field studies and service learning projects. BRCES is also home to Mountain View Farm, a teaching farm that raises organic produce for community subscribers and farmers’ markets in Washington, DC.

  • History:
  • BRCES was established in 1999, when the Robert and Dee Leggett Foundation purchased Mountain View farm to preserve the land's history, allow people to experience its natural beauty, and protect views from the Appalachian Trail. The center was initially managed as a project of the Leggett Foundation, and in 2004 a separate nonprofit was established to steward the land in partnership with the Foundation. Selected joint accomplishments have included: 1) establishing a conservation easement to protect the land in perpetuity; 2) stopping illegal poaching and dumping; 3) restoring soil fertility at the onsite farm; 4) mapping ecological communities; 5) identifying rare animals and plants onsite; 6) restoring the historic farmstead and springhouse; 7) identifying 33 sites of archaeological interest; 8) building a collection of historical artifacts; 9) establishing nine miles of hiking trails; 10) constructing an Education Center and nearby campground; 11) hosting university researchers and students; 12) serving as a training site for search and rescue teams; 13) offering our outstanding natural resources for year-round use in scouting and nature education programs; and 14) establishing our own onsite and offsite education programs.
