  • Mission:
  • Carpenter's Place is a 501(c)(3) faith-based organization serving homeless adults in Northern Illinois. “Carpenter's Place provides the tools necessary for rebuilding the lives of the homeless. Inspired by Christ's compassion, Carpenter's Place offers direction with accountability to people with broken lives, helping them find peace with God, themselves and their communities.” That is the mission statement upon which Carpenter's Place developed a wide range of services to address the unmet needs and gaps in service for chronically homeless adults.

CP operates the only day shelter for homeless men and women in Winnebago and Boone Counties. Annually, over 1,900 unduplicated homeless adults visit the day shelter to eat, rest, make business-related phone calls and review posted job listings in a supervised environment safe from the dangers of the streets and inclement weather. The day shelter is a portal for the homeless to access case management and other support services available at CP.

CP Case management staff provide comprehensive services to homeless adults beginning with an assessment of their current situation followed by the development and on-going monitoring of a life recovery plan to extract them from homelessness and achieve independent living. The intake assessment covers 14 areas of an individual’s life to identify core life issues with: Identification, Housing, Relationships, Physical Health, Mental Health, Addictions, Legal, Employment, Financial, Education, Transportation, Belongings, Recreation, and Spiritual.

Needs are identified and prioritized to develop a ‘Life Recovery Plan’ that serves as the blueprint to extract the individual from homelessness and into a life of self-sufficiency. Linkage to other area service providers to meet identified needs is a critical part of the program. Through this type of collaboration, homeless adults in the CP case management program gained access to services to address mental illness, addictions, physical ailments, and various other needs. The goal is to engage long-time homeless adults through outreach and then provide services to make it possible to extract them from homelessness, not just serve them in homelessness. CP focused on filling the gaps in service to the homeless in Northern Illinois.
