  • Mission:
  • The mission of the ARRIBA Center is to help economically marginalized persons with physical or mental disabilities, and/or members of ethnic and cultural minorities to find employment and live independently. The Center prepares clients to master activities of daily living, fully integrate into the community, become job-ready, and find and maintain employment. The Center helps its clients in the District of Columbia learn how to care for themselves, manage their abilities, secure employment, and improve their quality of life.

  • History:
  • In January 1999, a group of concerned, civic-minded disability leaders in DC created the ARRIBA Center for Independent Living (ARRIBA), a tax-exempt, non-profit community service organization. The founders of ARRIBA, many of whom were persons with disabilities and members of ethnic and cultural minority groups, wanted to facilitate the achievement of independent living and gainful employment to other, less fortunate, physically and/or mentally disabled people. Funding from a diverse sponsorship has allowed ARRIBA to operate and grow each year since its founding. ARRIBA’s sponsors in 2010 were Brother Help Thyself, the Inter-American Development Bank, DC Office on Latino Affairs, Anonymous Foundation, DC Department of Human Services (Fatherhood Initiative), DC Department of Employment Services, United Planning Organization of DC, Corina Higginson Trust, Safeway Foundation, DC Department on Disabilities--Rehabilitation Services Administration, and the Jovid Foundation. From 1999 through 2010, ARRIBA has provided services to over 3,200 clients with physical and/or mental disabilities, the majority of whom were of Hispanic and/or Caribbean origin, including in excess of 1,015 clients trained under the ACTDEAR program. As a result of the ARRIBA training, more than 80 percent of ARRIBA trainees have become gainfully employed
