General

  • Mission:
  • Big Brothers Big Sisters mentors children in need. We provide youngsters facing adversity with strong, enduring, professionally supported one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better, forever. We partner with parents, guardians, volunteers and others in the community and hold ourselves accountable for each child we serve achieving higher aspirations, greater confidence and better relationships through avoidance of risky behaviors and educational success. OUR VISION IS THAT ALL CHILDREN ACHIEVE SUCCESS IN LIFE.

    More than half the children in our program (58%) say there are too many bad influences around them – inadequate education, drugs, alcohol and unsafe neighborhoods – leading them in the wrong direction. Fortunately, there’s an easy, affordable, proven way to combat those influences – mentoring.

    Being matched with a Big Brother or Big Sister helps young people develop attributes that can reverse negative influences like these and help them grow into stable, productive adults. JUST 1 HOUR A WEEK WITH A MENTOR CAN HELP CHILDREN:

    * Perform better in school;
    * Get along better with their peers and families;
    * Resist drugs, alcohol and early parenting.

    It's a proven formula for success that benefits every one of us, and we hope you’ll continue reading to learn more about how you can help at-risk children get the support they need.

  • History:
  • Big Brothers Big Sisters has been focused on sustainability since its founding in 1904. As the nation's oldest, largest and best known mentoring agency, we're fortunate to draw upon a 107-year history of success.

    Our local affiliate was founded in 1967 to serve the needs of at-risk children in Morris County, N.J., and has since expanded to include three other northern New Jersey counties -- Bergen, Passaic and Sussex.

    Big Brothers Big Sisters is proud to have earned an A+ rating from the American Institute of Philanthropy and accreditation from the Better Business Bureau's Wise Giving Alliance. Big Brothers Big Sisters was also named one of the nation's top 10 non-profits by Forbes Magazine, making the gold star list of charities it believes worthy of donor consideration.

    We employ a broad base of support, from individual giving to corporate and foundation grants, and are expanding our grant-seeking efforts to identify new prospective partnerships. We hold annual fundraising events, such as a bowl-a-thon, walk-a-thon and dinner gala, to support and sustain our successful mentoring programs.

    We’re fortunate to enjoy a good rapport with and long-time support from a number of public and private foundations and are committed to preserving and honoring those relationships. We recently received a $15,000 grant from The William E. Simon Foundation and await decisions on several other proposals. We hope this proposal might be one of our success stories!
