General

  • Mission:
  • Seeking God’s guidance and believing that we are responsible to each other as members of one family, the mission of Bethesda Project is to find and care for the abandoned poor and to be family with those who have none. Bethesda Project has adopted the following vision statement in support of this mission: A faith-based, ecumenical organization, Bethesda Project’s fundamental commitment is to create communities wherein men and women, on the margins of a complex society, find sanctuary and have their basic needs met in the company of a compassionate and caring family. We are a community where residents, staff, volunteers, donors and board of directors meet as members to create a loving environment where all can flourish. We encourage one another to develop our potential to the fullest. We empower one another and offer opportunities for responsible participation in our communal life.

  • History:
  • Bethesda Project was founded in 1979 by Fr. Domenic Rossi, who led a prayer group at his parish, Daylesford Abbey, in suburban Pennsylvania. After receiving a call for help from Sr. Mary Klock, the group joined Sr. Mary’s volunteer effort to care for 10 mentally ill and homeless women in downtown Philadelphia. In 1983, Bethesda Project became an official non-profit organization, hired its first paid staff, and purchased a house that became a permanent home for the women.

Over the next twenty years, the organization purchased six buildings that provided permanent or transitional housing for 126 men and women, and began a shelter program that now operates out of three churches in the area. In 2003, at the request of the City of Philadelphia, Bethesda Project took over operation of a large men’s shelter now called Our Brothers' Place, which provides emergency shelter for 150 men as well as meals and a day program.

Today, Bethesda Project operates all these facilities and continues to create innovative programs to meet the unique needs of homeless and formerly homeless adults. Brothers' Keeper is a partnership with African-American churches that provides independent, affordable housing for 16 men who had lived in shelter. Last December, in partnership with Philadelphia non-profit Project H.O.M.E., Bethesda Project opened Connelly House, a LEED-certified building that houses Bethesda Project’s program for 24 men in recovery from addiction. This year marks the start of Bethesda Beacon, a program for the most vulnerable individuals which provides street outreach, referrals, and a winter-time overnight drop-in center for up to 75 shelter-resistant homeless adults. Bethesda Project serves over 7,000 men and women each year.

As it has grown, Bethesda Project has maintained the spirit of volunteerism and family that motivated its founding. The organization coordinates thousands of volunteer visits each year and intentionally cultivates a strong sense of community and acceptance at each of its programs.
