  • Mission:
  • Recognized leader in providing education and connecting resources that empower individuals and communities to make everyday decisions that promote sustainability, resulting in a better quality of life for all Iowans.

  • History:
  • Center on Sustainable Communities (COSC) was incorporated in 2005 when the organization’s three founders, Beth Hicks, Chaden Halfhill, and Lynnae Hentzen, recognized a real need for a local resource for education and connectivity in the sustainable building market place. Over the last six years, COSC has grown into an organization that empowers Iowans to create healthy, durable, resource conscious built environments that ultimately support strong, connected, vibrant communities.

As Iowa’s trusted resource for sustainable buildings, COSC initially focused on residential green building, providing trainings and networking for homeowners and professionals. In 2009, COSC secured an important contract with the Iowa Department of Economic Development and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to assist in the state’s disaster recovery efforts with a statewide training program- the Re-Building a Sustainable Iowa workshops. Also in 2009, COSC broadened the scope of programming to include commercial buildings and sustainable stormwater management.

COSC started out as a homegrown organization that now has 260 members, 4300 E-News followers, and has had over 9000 workshop and forum attendees since 2005. COSC’s rapid growth is due in large part to the organization’s collaborative nature and the prioritization of building strong relationships. In order to serve as a holistic resource for sustainable communities, COSC is embracing the opportunity to broaden its programming to include affordable housing, local food systems, healthy homes and communities, and regional sustainable planning. COSC is also working to expand its current programming across the state.
