  • Mission:
  • Columbus Area Habitat for Humanity creates partnerships to construct and sell housing for those in need; building in communities that will be strengthened by these volunteer efforts. Columbus Area Habitat for Humanity also seeks to raise awareness of critical housing issues; motivated by the belief that everyone should have, at least, a simple decent house in which to live.

  • History:
  • Columbus Area Habitat for Humanity, a 501(c)(3) corporation, was established in 1984 to construct affordable homes to sell to qualified, low-income families. Habitat builds in areas that will be strengthened by the presence and involvement of responsible homeowners who have a vested interest in the revitalization of their neighborhoods. Our first home was built in 1986 on 28th Street for a family of seven.

Habitat construction is supported by the volunteer labor and efforts of churches, civic organizations, businesses, and college students. Funds for Habitat homes come from community foundations, businesses, organizations and individuals.

Applicants for Habitat homes have incomes that fall between 30% and 60% of the median income for Columbus as identified by Housing and Urban Development. The Habitat formula is simple. A modest, sturdy home is built using volunteer labor and the sweat equity of the qualified applicants. Future homeowners must provide 500 hours of sweat equity – time spent building their own home as well as other Habitat homes. In addition, applicants attend a year-long Homeowner Academy which provides training in fiscal responsibility, home repair and maintenance, community responsibility and environmental responsibility. Applicants who qualify for homeownership must have a documented sustainable ability to pay a twenty-year no-profit, no-interest mortgage and an acceptable credit history. Families are identified based on need as well as their ability to pay and commitment to providing sweat equity. Mortgages are serviced by Columbus Habitat where a portion of the funds are used to further construction projects in the community.

In freeing families from the unending struggles that accompany inadequate shelter, Habitat homes open the doors to increased self-esteem and self-reliance, better health, improved educational status, and increased job opportunities. As the cycle of poverty is broken by providing decent shelter, children, families, neighborhoods and the community benefit.
