  • Mission:
  • The mission of our organization is two-fold. First, to aid the wetland managers in various aspects of the operation of the wetland to see that its ecological values as established in its restoration are maintained.
Second, to provide visitors to the wetland and attendees at off-site programs with interesting and informative information regarding the nature of Bolsa Chica, including its flora and fauna, and its values and benefits to our lives.

  • History:
  • The Amigos de Bolsa Chica was established in 1976 to advocate the preservation and restoration of the 1200 acre Bolsa Chica wetland, located on the coast of Huntington Beach, California. The wetland was designated for an intense marina/residential/commercial development in 1970. Through the Amigos' educational programs, the resulting public pressure led the landowners to drop the marina plans and the state eventually to purchase the wetland. The wetland, heavily degraded by oil extraction activities, was restored in 2006 at the cost of $147 million. The restoration has generated a whole new set of tasks for the Amigos. Besides informing a new generation about the benefits of coastal wetlands, the Amigos also has become involved in many aspects of the maintenance of the wetland, including such mundane things as trash pickup and Portapotty rentals as well as the design of interpretive signs, and the construction and installation of informational bulletin boards. (The managers of the wetland, the California Department of Fish and Game, have essentially no budget for any public interfaces.)
In addition to our maintenance involvement, our major program, education, continues to be in full swing. We offer free docent-guided walking tours of the wetland the first Saturday of each month. We provide an informational booth at these tours, as well. Attendance has ranged from 8 to 80 per day depending on the time of year and the weather. Subjects covered in the tours are birds, endangered species, wetland ecology, history, and restoration. In addition we offer private wetland tours for school groups and clubs. School tours amount to about 50 per year for an annual attendance of about 2000 students. For those schools who cannot afford the cost of busses, we supply funds for that. The Amigos is working in a joint program with Bolsa Chica State Beach to provide public educational programs at their Visitor Center, which is presently undergoing renovation. In addition, we plan to integrate the center's facilities with our school tours. Supported by a grant, we have hired a curriculum developer to design lesson plans and activities for the center program. The Amigos also provides off-site illustrated programs to schools, colleges and private organizations throughout the region. We average about five such programs per year. We conduct a 16 hour lecture and field training program to prepare docents for the interpretive programs described above. About 8 to 10 docents go through the training each year.
In 1998 the Amigos, in partnership with the Oral History Program at California State University, Fullerton, published a 700 page oral history of Bolsa Chica. In 2009 we published a book, "Bolsa Chica, Its History from Prehistoric Times to the Present". We also publish a quarterly newsletter, "The Tern Tide" which contains topical, in-depth articles about Bolsa Chica. We have produced a number of professionally made videos about Bolsa Chica covering its history, and wildlife, some of which have appeared on local public access cable channels.
