General

  • Mission:
  • Our mission statement is "Building a Better Community for all in Tucson and Southern Arizona." Our vision is for an economically strong, safe and healthy community where southern Arizona residents can live and work. United Way works to achieve its mission of Building A Better Community by promoting increased philanthropy, supporting donor choice and working to achieve long-term sustainable results for those that need it most in our community – children, families and seniors. We remain committed to increasing resources to address and improve local human service conditions.

  • History:
  • The United Way of Tucson and Southern Arizona (UWTSA) was founded in December of 1922 as the Tucson Community Chest and became incorporated in 1942. From its inception, UWTSA has played a critical role as a proactive catalyst in the community by creating new relationships with government and business and in forming alliances with agencies, corporations, the faith community and other community partners to improve the quality of life in Pima County and Southern Arizona.

In recent years, UWTSA shifted its focus from fundraising to achieving significant impacts with quantifiable outcomes in three targeted areas—income, education, and health—for children, families, and seniors. United Way’s current goals are to: (1) serve as the primary catalyst in mobilizing the community; (2) identify critical community issues and appropriate responses around income, education, and health; and (3) secure funds and other resources to develop an economically strong, safe and healthy community where southern Arizona residents can live and work. UWTSA strives to achieve these goals in a prudent, cost-effective manner by minimizing administrative costs and through its continued and extensive reliance on community volunteers and partnerships.
