  • Mission:
  • Because we believe inadequate transportation and automobile-centered urban planning perpetuate cycles of poverty and that a healthy community must include a system for its members to get where they need to go safely and reliably, Chainbreaker works to expand access to affordable transportation and support economically and ecologically sustainable communities for low-income people in Northern NM.

We envision a city with clean air, water and soil where all people have full access to their city.

  • History:
  • Chainbreaker formed in 2004 to help provide access to transportation for working people in Santa Fe. Our initial project, the Bicycle Resource Center (BRC) helped provide refurbished bicycles and teach mechanic skills to people in need of transportation. Through this program we've distributed well over 900 bikes and provided hands-on training to more than 3,000 people in need of transportation.

In 2008 we responded to the economic collapse by expanding our focus past bicycles and service provision. We began building a membership based in communities directly impacted by poor transportation infrastructure, lack of local amenities and urban sprawl so that we could address the root-causes of transportation issues and hold elected officials accountable to our community.

In 2009 we launched an education campaign to make the connections between gentrification, automobile dependency and poverty. We recently won our first organizing campaign to stop the Santa Fe City Council from cutting us service and imposing sweeping fare hikes. In less than three months we gathered over 600 written testimonials from bus riders, 2,000 petitions and mobilized dozens to attend City Council meetings, give public testimony and call elected officials in support of public transportation. This forced the Council into a compromise that avoided cuts and fare hikes for this fiscal year. Through this campaign we built strong and lasting relationships with local unions and other community organizations.
