  • Mission:
  • Uniting art, community and culture.

  • History:
  • Angels Gate Cultural Center emerged from a group of San Pedro artists, in the 1970s, who created artist’s studio and exhibition space within the1940-era Army barracks of Angels Gate Park. These artists’ spaces were used by a variety of professional artists, art and cultural classes and art exhibits for the community. It became an artists’ hub that was well regarded for high quality art and culture. Over the last 28 years, Angels Gate Cultural Center has expanded from a local artists’ district into a renowned cultural center providing high-quality exhibits, interactive classes, engaging events and educational programs.

In 1977, San Pedro’s Angels Gate Park became a facility of the City of Los Angeles’ Department of Recreation and Parks, with the requirement that a cultural center to be developed for the community. In 1982, the group of local artists expanded their endeavors as an artists’ community and Angels Gate Cultural Center was granted non-profit status and a contract with the City of Los Angeles. These artists included ceramists, painters, sculptors, writers, musicians, photographers, printmakers, jewelers and film makers. The gallery space exhibited both local and international artists. In 2005, Angels Gate Cultural Center successfully negotiated a 30-year lease with the Department of Recreation and Parks.

Today, Angels Gate Cultural Center continues as a renowned community resource for art and culture. Angels Gate Cultural Center artist’s space offers artists with dynamic and inspirational studios utilized by over 50 professional artists. Over the years, Angels Gate Cultural Center has been a great resource offering a variety of interactive community classes, for both children and adults, including Print Making, Ceramics, Drawing, Martial Arts, Yoga and Dance classes. While the schedule of classes will vary depending on current-day popularity, some of these classes have been offered since its inception in 1982.

In addition, Angels Gate Cultural Center brings art education into over 30 schools in the San Pedro/South Bay area. Through the Artists in the Classroom program, professional artist-teachers provide art instruction, in accordance with state standards, to promote creativity, cross-disciplinary knowledge and critical thinking.

Angels Gate Cultural Center produces renowned art exhibits in its galleries of both local and international artists. In conjunction with many art and community organizations, Angels Gate Cultural Center is the proud host of many cultural events and concerts both on-site and throughout the community.
