  • Mission:
  • Our mission is to increase the availability of high-quality, safe, Affordable and Workforce housing options. Thru innovative reuse and rehabilitation we incorporate economic benefits, environmental stewardship and social solutions. As social entrepreneurs, Builders of Hope sustainably revitalizes at-risk communities -- one home, one family, one life at a time.

Our vision is to positively impact the development of Livable, Walkable, Sustainable cities and create stable communities so families can actually live where they work. We see a future in which our urban neighborhoods are truly mixed use and mixed income, where families can thrive while building economic independence and generational wealth. We see a future in which New Orleans is no longer recovering, but rather is revitalized.

Builders of Hope saves functionally obsolete structures destined for the landfill, creating hope and the American Dream for working families through a full and thoughtful green rehabilitation. Our world and our lives are more connected than ever in this modern society: environmental concerns have tremendous economic impact, which profoundly affects our social structure. When we unite our efforts to address all of these issues and tackle the root cause, we can begin to find lasting solutions. Our mission incorporates this triple-bottom line approach to sustainable development in an effort to have a comprehensive, sustained impact on the community.

  • History:
  • Builders of Hope [BOH] has created a model for sustainable revitalization based on the connection between communities and resources. We begin with homes in need of rescue, families in need of permanent housing and a workforce in need of skill development and permanent employment. Through partnerships with credit and homebuyer counseling services, financial institutions, local government and community groups, we have created a revolutionary formula that leads to a viable solution for the housing crisis currently facing our most vulnerable low-income populations. The BOH model is so unique we hold a provisional patent from the federal government for our process.

The model sprung from the realization of an expanding gap between the availability and the need for affordable, urban housing solutions in the Raleigh, NC area. Infill and commercial redevelopment have replaced moderate sized, affordable homes with million-dollar dream homes and upscale retail, without providing a local replacement options for the lost inventory. Our solution addresses this need, while introducing green technologies to the low-income population. Each project we develop refines the process, expanding our capacity to incorporate new technologies and materials into homes affordably. Continual research and collaboration with entities creating these new technologies and building standards, such as Advanced Energy and the NC Solar Center, keep BOH on the leading edge and give our homebuyers and tenants the most comfortable and affordable environments in which to build their lives. We are currently operating in 5 cities throughout the State of North Carolina, with seven active projects.

The core Builders of Hope Model, Building Green Communities, creates an enclave of security and community for working families. Functionally obsolete homes are donated to BOH, moved and set on a new foundation in a new community. Using recycled homes forms the basis of the Extreme Green Rehabilitation process and allows on average 65% of the original structure to be reused, saving millions of pounds of waste from the landfill and simultaneously minimizing the use of new materials and non-renewable resources. The donation model keeps rehabilitation costs low, creating a perfect match for delivering high quality housing at an affordable price. At the time they are moved, the single family homes are oriented on their new lots to maximize passive solar benefits and create a cohesive streetscape – while the houses will all be unique, they will look like they belong together, like a community.

Our second model, in-place urban revitalization, focuses on improving the available housing within existing neighborhoods that have fallen into decline. The Extreme Green process is replicated, with the exception of the house moving component. This method effectively absorbs currently substandard housing stock, transforming it into high quality housing, without creating new excess stock or infringing on existing green or undeveloped land. Since the collapse of the housing market in 2008, this model has held particular relevance.

All Builders of Hope developments follow the Extreme Green Rehabilitation process, a core component of our model. Every residential rehabilitation project presents unique issues which require distinct construction strategies and alternatives for greening the home practically and affordably.

Builders of Hope has established itself as an innovative solution to urban renewal, sustainability, workforce development, and affordable housing. BOH has created this revolutionary model through the rehabilitation of rescued homes while preserving the personality and framework of each neighborhood in which we work. As of today, more than 50 families of modest means are living in top- quality, energy efficient rescued Builders of Hope homes, in new or renewed neighborhoods in North Carolina’s Triangle area alone.
