  • Mission:

  • An internationally recognized force in poverty law, Bet Tzedek was founded in 1974 by community leaders who sought to act upon a central tenet of Jewish law and tradition, “Tzedek, tzedek tirdof – justice justice you shall pursue.” This doctrine decrees that it is the duty of all men and women to advocate the just cause of the poor. Consistent with this teaching, each year, Bet Tzedek helps thousands of low-income residents of Los Angeles achieve equal access to justice.

Bet Tzedek serves as the hub of a broad network of well-integrated municipal and non-profit partners collaborating to provide holistic services and advocacy. Building on the agency’s expertise and experience gained by representing individuals, Bet Tzedek identifies systemic injustices and builds coalitions to advocate for sensitive and improved legislation on behalf of the elderly, caregivers, nursing home residents, metally and physically disabled and many others. The quality of Bet Tzedek services are known and respected throughout the court system and the community. Many programs have been recongized through awards for their innovation, best practices models and pro bono excellence. The agency relies upon the financial support of individuals and foundations to maintain the services which are all offered free of charge to the clients.

  • History:
  • For more than 37 years now, Bet Tzedek has pursued unique, practical, and effective strategies to address the legal needs of residents of Los Angeles County of every racial and religious background who are disenfranchised by poverty. The agency creates models that are currently being replicated in several other counties in California with support from the courts. Bet Tzedek’s portfolio of projects combines direct legal representation with powerful outreach, education, and legislative advocacy. Our programs reduce barriers and increase access to legal protections and appeals to ensure that everyone, regardless of financial means, has equal access to the legal process. Bet Tzedek provides advice and council, guidance, and legal representation when clients are denied: earned wages and safe working conditions; protections against abuse in their home or in a residential care facility; the opportunity to appeal evictions, forclosures, and landlord disputes as well as many other rights. The agencies outreach and education efforts target underserved low income communities particularly the elderly and disabled.
