  • Mission:
  • The Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies’ mission is the creation, dissemination and application of knowledge about ecological systems. This knowledge is created through scientific research, disseminated through teaching, writing, and exhibits, and applied through participation in decision-making regarding the ecological management of natural resources and through promotion of a broader awareness about the importance of ecological relationships to human welfare. As one of the largest ecological research programs in the world, Cary supplies unbiased scientific research that leads to more effective environmental policy decisions and increased environmental literacy.

    The Institute's Program Goals include:
    • To advance the basic understanding about the structure, function and temporal development of ecological systems.
    • To provide knowledge needed for the solution of environmental problems.
    • To develop an understanding of how people learn about the processes of science, and about ecological concepts.
    • To enhance the general understanding of ecology by students, policy makers, and the general public.
    • To train a new generation of ecologists capable of addressing and solving complex environmental problems important to human societies.

The Institute is dedicated to the promotion of a broader awareness about the importance of ecological relationships to human welfare. Education and public outreach are integral to the Cary Institute’s mission. Our scientists are actively engaged in training the next generation of ecologists; many have adjunct appointments at colleges and universities, including Yale, Cornell, Princeton, Columbia, and Bard. Educational programs include a public lecture series, weekend ecology field programs, undergraduate research opportunities, K-12 school curricula, teacher-training workshops, and an ecology-themed summer day camp.

  • History:
  • Founded in 1983 by the eminent ecologist Dr. Gene E. Likens, the Cary Institute is a world-renowned leader in applying the ecosystem approach to some of society's most pressing problems, from the quantity and quality of freshwater resources to the health of our forests. The unbiased scientific information produced by our scientists is essential to sound environmental policy, management decisions, and education curricula.

Dr. Likens, and his colleagues were instrumental in first documenting the occurrence of acid rain in the eastern United States and in supplying the science that has led to air pollution controls to combat it. Other hallmark projects include unraveling the relationship between biodiversity loss and emerging infectious diseases such as Lyme and West Nile Virus, tracking how climate change influences the spread of invasive species, the utilization of ecosystem engineering in sustainable environmental management, and identifying ecological regime shifts. In depth details about all of Cary’s investigative studies can be found at

Collaborative long-term studies conducted by our scientists have been instrumental in informing the Clean Air Act, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, and environmental management practices throughout the Northeast, including the Hudson River, New York’s Catskill and Adirondack forests, New Hampshire’s White Mountains, and the Baltimore, Maryland watershed.
