  • Mission:
  • The mission of Communities in Schools (CIS) is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. We believe that every child needs and deserves: A one-on-one relationship with a caring adult, A safe place to learn and grow, A marketable skill to use upon graduation, A chance to give back and A healthy start and a healthy future.

  • History:
  • Locally, Communities in School chapter has been active for 1 year. In the past, the school district had an established non-profit, Scotland County Education Foundation, but was renamed Communities in Schools of Scotland County. This foundation was originally established in 2004. Communities in Schools is the nation's leading community based organization helping kids succeed in school and prepare for life. The LEA saw the need for a program that brought all sectors of the community together to serve the at-risk students as well as the entire student body. CIS is guided and directed by the state chapter's scientifically-based evidence and all programming aspects are proven to have school-wide impact on reducing dropout rates, increasing graduation rates and improving student performance. When implemented with high fidelity, the CIS Model results in a higher percentage of students reaching proficiency in fourth- and eighth-grade reading and math. There is a strong correlation with positive school-level outcomes like dropout and graduation rates. All communities function with fragmented services (i.e. Human Services, Businesses, Colleges, Faith-based, etc). CIS enhances teamwork and coordination while also facilitating partnerships between the community and the schools.
