  • Mission:
  • Blue Frontier Campaign is building the solutions-oriented constituency for our ocean, our coasts and the communities that depend on them.

  • History:
  • Founded in 2003, the Blue Frontier Campaign (BFC) is dedicated to promoting unity among all ocean interests in order to build a powerful social movement for our public seas and identify and enact solutions that can make a difference both in policy and in the water.

We convene meetings such as Blue Vision Summits that draw grassroots and national organizations and their leaders as well as elected officials and representatives from all levels of government. Once gathered together, they can discuss challenges, solutions, policies, and more, sharing strategies and building awareness of one another and opportunities for collaboration. The tools we have developed and provide to the community include 50 Ways to Save the Ocean, an action-oriented book illustrated by Sherman’s Lagoon Cartoonist Jim Toomey, and the Blue Movement Directory, a listing of 1,400 marine groups in the United States (and beyond). The Peter Benchley Ocean Awards were developed by Blue Frontier Campaign and work to raise the profile and celebrate the accomplishments of ocean heroes across a range of sectors—including science, policy, media, youth and grassroots activism. They’ve been called ‘The Academy Awards for those who act on behalf of the ocean.’ Our Ocean Explorers project provides an opportunity to engage individuals through extraordinary adventures undertaken by ordinary people. Roz Savage is a solo ocean rower and Margo Pellegrino is a coastal paddler. Both women undertake journeys in an effort to raise awareness about marine conservation matters.

The role of BFC is to unite the groups and individuals that are passionate about marine conservation and engage new individuals/groups to create a vocal, present constituency for the ocean. BFC emphasizes marine grassroots, or seaweed, organizing to bring the voice of citizen activists into regional, national and international decision-making that impact our seas, and increase public awareness of the challenges and solutions to threats facing our living ocean from the proliferating effects of industrial over-fishing, pollution, sprawling coastal development, and fossil-fuel fired climate change. Through our work, we invite and inspire diverse marine/environmental conservation organizations, maritime groups, scientists, policymakers and other stakeholders to unite as a more effective constituency for the health and abundance of our seas and the communities that depend on them.
