  • Mission:
  • The Colorado Mountain Club (CMC) is organized to unite the energy, interest and knowledge of the students, explorers and lovers of the mountains of Colorado; to collect and disseminate information regarding the Rocky Mountains on behalf of science, literature, art and recreation; to stimulate the public interest in our mountain areas; encourage the preservation of forests, flowers, fauna, and natural scenery; and render readily accessible the alpine attractions of the region.

The CMC’s Conservation Department strives to protect the wildlands, the habitats, and the wild experience in Colorado, as well as forge strong connections between people, communities, and the land. The program achieves its goals through advocacy, outreach, policy development, service, and education. The Conservation Department implements four programs – Protecting Wild Places, Restoring the Quiet Experience, Stewardship, and Access. Each program is designed to work in concert with the others to address imminent threats to the landscape while also crafting sustainable solutions to environmental and recreation issues statewide.

  • History:
  • CMC has been deeply involved in Conservation since its founding in 1912. The CMC was instrumental in the creation of Rocky Mountain National Park. Over the years, the CMC has helped pass legislation to protect Columbine wildflowers, fought billboards, and even got Interstate 70 rerouted to avoid cutting through Eagles Nest Wilderness. CMC members testified in support of the 1964 Wilderness Act. In 1954 the Boulder and Pikes Peak groups actively opposed the dam proposed for Echo Park within Dinosaur National Monument – which the Club also helped establish in the 1930s. Stewardship has also been a long priority – with CMC members helping to plant trees in the wake of wildfires in the 1940s as well as litter collecting trips in the 1960s. Today, CMC Conservation works to protect our backcountry for the next century of Coloradans.
