  • Mission:
  • Best Buddies' mission is to establish a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment and leadership development for people with intellectual and
    developmental disabilities (IDD).

  • History:
  • Best Buddies International was founded in 1989 when Anthony Kennedy Shriver, then a Georgetown University student, observed the unjustified lack of opportunity for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to socialize with their peers without disabilities. He recognized the power and impact of friendship in building self-esteem, improving social and life skills and increasing integration into all facets of society. Since then, Best Buddies International has grown to encompass seven programs including: Best Buddies Middle Schools, High Schools, Colleges, Jobs, Citizens, e-Buddies, and Buddy Ambassadors.

Best Buddies programs engage participants in every state in the US as well as programs in 46 countries around the world. Best Buddies California is a state affiliate of Best Buddies International and opened its first state office in Santa Monica in 1989. The Best Buddies California state headquarters is currently located in Los Angeles with a field office in San Francisco.
