  • Mission:
  • The Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of Alaska's wildlife through conservation, education and quality animal care.

  • History:
  • The Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center has emerged as an educational institute focused on science-based conservation and research. Today it also offers progressive animal care.

As mentioned, the Center was founded in 1993 under the name Big Game Alaska. When the institute first opened to the public it was touted as a local attraction exhibiting game animals and largely consisted of a plains bison herd.

In 2003, founding director Mike Miller renamed the facility, the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center to better reflect the facility’s growing commitment to the conservation of imperiled wildlife. At that time the Center also became a non-profit organization which now receives nearly 300,000 visitors a year as the largest developed attraction in the state according to the Alaska Tourism Industry Association.

The 200 acre facility’s wildlife campus sits between the Chugach and Kenai mountain ranges and is surrounded by Turnagain Arm, approximately 10 miles south of Girdwood in the Municipality of Anchorage.

The facility is now comprised of nearly all wild ungulates (hoof stock) and carnivores native to Alaska from moose and the endangered wood bison to coyotes, and Kodiak brown bears. We also have a growing collection of birds of prey. Because we remain committed to rehabilitating and reintroducing orphaned and injured wildlife into wild lands our animal collection is dictated by what nature brings in our direction.

We have been able to develop conservation and science programs to study our wildlife resources in ways that lead to improvements in both captive animal and free-ranging animal welfare as well as the management of wild populations.
