  • Mission:
  • MISSION & GOALS: The mission of the Art Docents is to provide high-quality visual arts curriculum to students in kindergarten through 8th grades in the Los Gatos Union School District, with the goal of fostering the development of flexible, innovative, and creative individuals. The Art Docents serve students at Fisher Middle, Blossom Hill, Daves Avenue, Lexington, Van Meter schools.

  • Overview:
  • Our organization is supported by 51 trained Active members and 26 Sustaining members. Training for new members takes place over a 10-week period starting each September. This consists of one morning a week for 2 1/2 hours. Two long-time docents familiar with our program lead the new docents through art history lessons, visual art terms and appreciation, workshop techniques, and classroom management. Once a new member has completed training, they become "Active" and are able to enter the classroom starting in January. During a normal school-year, active members take our program into the classrooms of the Los Gatos Union School District.

    Our programs consist of:
    A) Print presentations: aligned with adopted state standards, the focus is on visual-art appreciation through examination of the elements of art and principles of design. Each class, grades K-5, receives one art appreciation lesson a month for five months. The docents follow a lesson plan and bring five to six fine art prints to each classroom. The students are engaged in a discussion of the prints for approximately 30 minutes. Middle school students (grades 6-8) in Art, Spanish and French language classes each receive a 90 minute digital art history lesson followed by a jeopardy-style game to reinforce what they have seen and learned.

    B) Hands-on Art Technique Lessons (workshops): aligned with adopted state standards, each class, grades K-5 and grade 7 receive workshops. Kindergarten -- foil sculpture; first-grade -- printmaking; second-grade -- collage; third-grade -- abstract art pastel drawing; fourth-grade -- 3-part face/figure drawing; fifth-grade -- photography; seventh-grade -- scientific illustration.

    C) Guest Artist Series: each school receives a visit from a professional artist who meets individually with the classes. The students view a demonstration and engage the artist in conversation about his/her art. Past artists have included sculptors, painters, print-makers, weavers, and re-purposers. An Art Docent committee meets each year and recruits, reviews, and chooses the artists. Artists are paid a per diem of $350.

    D) Annual Student Art Show: a week-long district-wide non-juried art show with over 2500 pieces of art is held each spring on the campus of Fisher Middle School. Each student K-5 is represented along with the seventh grade. Docents collect, label, mount, hang, and staff the event. Each classroom, grades K-5, tours the show during school hours. At the end of the week, docents dismantle the show and return all art to the teachers. Open to the public each afternoon between 2-4:00 and one evening during the week.

  • History:
  • The Art Docents was founded in 1973 by a Los Gatos Union School District art teacher and a community member when they applied for and received backing from the district's Board of Trustees. In 1980, faced with budget cuts from the district necessitated by Proposition 13, the Art Docents incorporated as a non-profit organization. Funding assistance from members of the community and the Town of Los Gatos allowed the group to continue operations. Thanks to a supportive community, the organization has continued to grow in scope and number of services. With approximately 100 trained volunteer members, the Art Docents provide a discipline-based visual arts program encompassing art history, art appreciation, aesthetics and art techniques to over 3100 students.
