  • Mission:
  • The mission of Aliive-Roberts County is to have a healthy and safe community for our youth and families. In order to fulfill this vision, the overall goals for the organization are to reduce the percentage of youth risk taking behaviors such as violence, involvement in gangs, thinking about or attempting suicide, and alcohol and other drug related behaviors among Roberts County and Lake Traverse Reservation youth.

  • History:
  • The coalition in Roberts County began in 2004 when the Ministerial Association starting bringing key stakeholders to the table to address the multiple suicides that had occurred. The coalition operated on no funding until a small grant was procured to help focus on suicide prevention. With this funding, the coalition was able to implement the Search survey to three out of the six schools in the coverage area in 2007. The coalition was then called "There's Hope." In the last three years, with the addition of the Community Prevention Networker at the Human Service Agency, Sara McGregor-Okroi, the coalition has changed dramatically. In 2008, the coalition decided to expand its focus beyond suicide prevention and begin looking at and addressing some of the factors that would lead a youth to contemplate or complete suicide. The coalition then began to look at youth substance abuse. In 2009, the coalition applied for and received a Drug Free Communities Support grant from the federal government. This money yielded a second survey of Roberts County and Lake Traverse Reservation youth, this time utilizing the Pride survey. It has also enabled the coalition to hire a staff person and to begin to address issues such as youth alcohol use, prescription and over the counter medication abuse, youth tobacco use and marijuana use. Currently the coalition also supports a project to reduce youth gang involvement through a grant offered by the South Dakota Department of Correction, and a Suicide Prevention project funded through the Department of Mental Health of South Dakota. The coalition has also begun a strong partnership with the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate Community Injury Prevention Team and the Injury Prevention Specialist for the tribe, Shannon White. It is through this partnership that the coalition is able to target more of the tribal population in their efforts. The leadership has changed from the Ministerial Association to Sara McGregor-Okroi and Shannon White. And the membership of the coalition has expanded to include a variety of community partners. In 2010, the coalition decided to rename itself and is now called "Aliive-Roberts County." There are three projects under the umbrella of Aliive-Roberts County, with Project Building Bridges being one of them.
Up until recently, The Human Service Agency has served as the coalition's fiscal agent. The weakness of being limited in the financial and grant opportunities that could be looked at has been addressed, as the coalition has applied for its nonprofit status enabling it to serve as its own fiscal agent. It is also the hope that with the establishment of a separate organization. The degree of buy in and support from the surrounding communities will increase, in addition to an increased awareness of the coalition, its mission, vision, goals and projects. So far the community support we have received as we unveil our plans has been overwhelming. We hope that the change brings positive things to our community.
