General

  • Mission:
  • The CNPS is a French public research Laboratory in Bioacoustics (Science). The objective of this team is to better understand acoustic communications in animal societies. Since 2001, Olivier Adam is working on marine mammals, especially on the analysis of the sound emitted by cetaceans.Goals of his research is to detect the presence of the vocal whales, to localize them from their sounds, and to estimate the number of the individuals in a group. This information is crucial for biologists, 1) to know how many cetaceans are present in a specific area (habitat, environment), 2) to have information about their behavior (interactions between individuals, male/male, female/female, male/female, adult/calf) and 3) to better estimate the impact of the anthropogenic sounds on cetaceans and their environment.

  • History:
  • Since 2007, Olivier Adam started a program on Humpback whales in Madagascar. The objective was to analyse their songs. These sounds emitted by males are crucial during the breeding season, and could have different roles: attraction of females or/and territory delimiter between males. This program will end in March 2012. And we actually starts a new research program to give fine details on the Humpback whale population of Madagascar. We will involve for this program young volunteers and students from this Region (Madagascar, Mayotte, Comorros, La Reunion). Our request budget is dedicated for them.
