  • Mission:
  • The H.A.R.T. team, from the Collinsville Unit 10 School District, is one of the first in the St. Louis Metropolitan area. The members have received certification from the National Institute for Trauma and Loss in Children. Each member holds certification in TLC as a Trauma and Loss School Specialist. Some members have recently completed the TLC Trauma and Loss Consultant certification.
The H.A.R.T. team will be activated during any event that causes a state of heightened emotions and interrupts the normal daily routine. Research has shown that when there is no intervention applied, the result is chaos. Our H.A.R.T. team will be brought into a school building to assist the students, staff, and administration in dealing with an unexpected event.

  • History:
  • The Help And Response Team was established in 2003 after a fatal bus/car accident that occurred before school. During this event we had staff and students who did not report to school on time due to involvement in the accident or because they stopped to help with the situation. This generated concern as there was the general knowledge that the accident had occurred and no formal response from the district was available. After the incident, the decision was made by the staff who responded to this incident that a more formal, organized response was needed. As a result, research was completed and the National Institute for Trauma and Loss in Children had training programs that would assist us in this effort. Team members were chosen to represent all grade levels though out the district. Training began the summer of 2003. Training programs last 3-4 days during the summer months. Since the inception of our team, we have been utilized for, student deaths due to illness, fire, accidents, murder, suicide and staff deaths. We use the researched based data form TLC to organize services to students and staff. Our team makes classroom presentations, serves as liaisons with the family, provides counseling services, and provides large and small group debriefings. Our team members are committed and require annual training to be able to provide the services needed to the school family when a tragedy occurs.
